Applying Domain-Driven Design to APIs and Microservices
How do I design a reusable API that meets developer and customer needs? How do I know that I have the right-sized microservices with the proper boundaries? Teams are excited about the prospects of building solutions with APIs and microservices. However, without a proper architectural view and design process the result is often a release of less-than-ideal API and microservice design that meets immediate needs but requires a complete redesign.

This talk will demonstrate how systems design and domain-driven design can be used to create clear, well-designed, long-lasting APIs and microservices. Applying these principles will result in a cleaner API design, help identify API product and microservice boundaries, and identify new API product opportunities.

What the Web Can Teach Us About Microservices
Looking to the Web for inspiration, this talk will discuss how service discovery and service evolution will increasingly matter in growing microservice ecosystems.

Microservices currently focus on development speed and safety, delivered at scale. This talk looks as two currently not so popular topics in this space, specifically at service discovery and service evolution, and how they will increasingly matter in growing microservice ecosystems. Specifically, we will look to the web for inspiration, which has been a successfully evolving service ecosystem for quite a while.

OPEN TALK: Yelp's Move from a Monolith to Microservices
At Yelp we value our ability to quickly ship code. One key factor in scaling our engineering process to over three hundred engineers and several million lines of Python has been our move to a microservices architecture; over the course of the past five years we've gone from zero to over one hundred production microservices.

In this presentation I'll discuss the technical and organizational changes that made this change possible. I'll start by covering what a typical monolith to microservice migration might look like, and how to use different types of education to increase the microservice adoption rate. I'll then discuss the role of standardization in a microservice architecture. I'll also cover microservice ownership and its interplay with operational responsibilities.

APIs for Microservices
The concept of Microservices is changing the way we build and architect our systems, but are we really setting ourselves up for success? How can we ensure that our APIs act as a contractual, yet flexible representation of our service – and how do we address the “glue” issue to prevent ourselves from service lock-in? In this session we’ll jump back into history to see what’s worked and what hasn’t, look at how to build truly decoupled services, and explore tools and technologies that make the entire process easier.

OPEN TALK: The Politics App from CNN and CA Technologies - A Case Study Using APIs and Serverless Architecture
This year’s presidential election is surely the most compelling contest in recent US history. Putting political divisions aside, we can all agree that timely access to relevant information could help voters to be properly informed when it comes time to vote. That’s why CNN and CA Technologies partnered with the goal of creating a mobile app that would keep voters educated and engaged throughout the election cycle. To achieve this, we needed to design an application architecture that could empower editors to publish news as it happens and enhance it with key statistics and multimedia content. In this session, you will see how we reached our goal by using APIs to integrate cloud-based Lambda functions with legacy on-premises infrastructure.

KEYNOTE: API Evolution in the Age of the Service Graph
APIs are evolving from flat representations of systems data to multi-layered systems that are accessed both internally and externally. Microservices, as they strangle monoliths out of existence, are propogating APIs deeper and deeper into your systems, creating a many-layered series of service APIs. Internal vs. external access, traceability, security and performance become critical considerations as your entire application becomes a series of service APIs.
